How to Download a YouTube Thumbnail
Thumbnails are separate images, not frames pulled from the video. YouTube publishes several sizes, and the largest one is usually available at a predictable URL.
From the video ID
Every YouTube link contains an 11-character video ID. The thumbnail sizes live under i.ytimg.com/vi/<id>/, from mqdefault (small) to maxresdefault (largest).
If maxresdefault does not exist for an older video, hqdefault is the reliable fallback.
From DownloadTray
Paste the video link into DownloadTray. The result card uses the thumbnail as the poster and shows the video metadata.
For channels that need the image file, use the direct i.ytimg.com URL for the size you want.
Usage note
A thumbnail is someone else’s image. Using it as your own artwork can infringe copyright even if the video is public. Ask the creator before reusing it.
Frequently asked questions
What is the largest thumbnail size?
maxresdefault (1280×720) when it exists. Older or low-resolution uploads may only have hqdefault (480×360).
Can I get a frame from the video instead?
A thumbnail is not a video frame. For a frame, download the video and export it in an editor.
Is the thumbnail free to use?
No. It belongs to the creator or rights holder; public visibility is not a licence.
