YouTube Download Not Working? What the Error Means
YouTube refuses a download for a specific reason, and the message on the result card names it. Here is what each failure means and whether a retry can help.
The video is live
Live streams are not supported. A stream that is still running has no finished file to save, so the resolver returns nothing. Wait until the broadcast ends and the replay is available, then try the normal watch link.
The video is private or deleted
Private, members-only and removed videos cannot be resolved. Open the link in a logged-out browser: if YouTube asks you to sign in, DownloadTray cannot fetch it either.
The video is age-restricted
Age-restricted videos require an account and a confirmed birth date. The resolver has no session, so it receives no stream. There is no workaround on the client side.
The video is region-locked
Some videos, especially sports highlights and licensed music, are blocked in certain countries. If the resolver runs outside the allowed region it gets nothing, even though the video plays for you.
The error message says so explicitly. A resolver in the allowed region is the only real fix.
The video is rights-restricted
Rights holders can disable embedding and third-party playback for specific videos. The page still loads, but the streams are not offered to the resolver. Try another upload of the same clip.
The resolver timed out
YouTube sometimes answers slowly. The request has a time limit, so a slow response is reported as a timeout rather than a permanent failure. Retry once after a few seconds.
Frequently asked questions
Can a retry fix a private video?
No. Private, deleted, age-restricted and region-locked videos fail every time. Only timeouts and rate limits improve with a retry.
Why is the message different each time?
DownloadTray reports the actual failure: no media, timeout, rate limit or unsupported post. That is deliberate, so you know whether retrying is worth it.
Are Shorts handled differently?
No. Shorts links follow the same rules and the same failure cases as watch links.
